The British goverment wants to tag people with all their details. A bit like the ID card but in your arm.

I'm for it ( I am against it).

Nothing sucks more than being in a foreign country, unable to translate "allergic to penicillin". Also, it'd make forensic crimes much easier.

I say if we start down orad doing that we will all end up like the people in Demolitionman. have no money all done with computer scanners and a hand ful of people in some room always knowing exactly where we are and what we are doing.

That sounds great. Is it the same chip they use for dogs? I have found that is a good idea on that line. I somewhat like that people idea. Put everyone in there place and let them know who they are.

i just dont like the thought of having all of my infomation in a little chip and having people know my every movement like araki said if we start doing this what will it lead to in the years to come

You're assuming that they will make it so that they can be read from a long distance, but for that to happen, you'd need to have an 100 foot long antenna in your arm. They'd likely make it localized, so that they could scan it, pull up your info, and send you off on your merry, conspiracy theorist ways

Personally, I am neither for or against (this option should be in the poll). however, a bit of context around the issue would help; would this apply to criminals or to people with certain medical conditions or to everyone?

Actually, a chip like that doesn't actually contains any information. They are just a mean to assign you an identification number associate with a corresponding number in a database that in turn contains your personal information. Think of a bar code. Once the cashier scan the code, this information is compared in a database telling him/her whenever the product is a box of cereals or a can of soup, the price of the item or if there is a rebate, etc... So technically, any information that would shows up once you are "scanned" is already in a database somewhere (the chip implant is just a device to get access to this information more quickly).

As for being able to track you, such tiny chip will never be able to work like a powerful emitter but there are several workarounds. Just think about a store with detectors at the entrances; they donâ€™t know if you have stolen a product but they know if you cross the doors with the product that is still magnetized. So technically, if a government was motivated enough to put detectors at every stop sign or at key locations, then instead of ringing an alarm it would register "Human No. 701 573 486B" on "Main Street / Fake Avenue intersection" detector at "3:10 PM 15/10/2006" the moment you come within 10 meters or so of that detector.

But honestly, I think most governments are more concerned about how they will manage to get re-elected than to know that you were shopping at Best Buy last Friday.

doesnt have to be read from long distance away just set up a network of scanners in an area and antennas dont have to be that long any more just look at how long some of newer cell phones antennas are. place 3 or 4 strategiccally placed scanners in a medium or small town and they could cover whole town. and remember that the technology that most common people see is not the most advanced available yet. a new computer chip is probably 3-4 months old and next one out before its widely distributed.

At any rate, I stand by my case of medical history being an excellent reason for these, but to put scanners everywhere on every street and every building would be such a massive undertaking that the governments would be in so much debt, Alexander Hamilton's head'll spin.

it wouldnt be as hard as you seem to think it would be most of needed technology already exists. if it was as complicated to get scanners as you are implying there would be a cell phone towe in every neighborhood, or every couple of blocks. its just a matter of re evaluating uses for the technology.

They are planning to introduce ID cards with biometric data in the UK. These will be a normal card with a chip, not a chip inside people. They occassionally bring up the idea of implanted tags in criminals, but it doesn't get anywhere because of the ethical issues.

They aren't planning to implant tags in the whole UK population... I imagine somewhere down the line someone might have heard about the biometric data on a chip and assumed it was an implant. It isn't. It's just a chip in a card.
