Who are we and why are we here?
As is customary at the beginning of new years, I look back on what has happened and ask myself, Where are we? What has mankind accomplished in 2006? Is he better off? Or worse?
The war in Iraq, the AIDS epidemic, the avian flu "crisis", abortion, homosexuality, and countless other popular issues are here because we brought them. We. You and me. Maybe not directly, per se, but through inaction we are as guilty as if we have actively worked against our views.
It is important to realize that in the hustle and bustle of today's society, people must remember the big picture- where we are, where we are going, where should we be going, and how we will get there. Much of the problems of today are caused by people not having the vision to see these questions and their answers. So, what do you think? Do you know the answers to the urgent issues? Or are you merely going along, not caring about the future of the human race?
People worry about the future in so many ways. How amazing it is that not one of them acts to change it. The future is in our hands.
What is your opinion on the topic?

As humans we will "survive" as we always have. May I add another problem is that people don't look to the past. We have had more "wars" than we can count, plagues killing millions and other events, which have set us back. And more or less we put a "Band-Aid" over it with technology, or just push it aside and keep the later generations from learning about it. As of now we have no way of "fixing" things. The only way to change the world is to make a lot of hard headed people change their view on the world. Just hope things are kept in what little order we have, and nobody is stupid enough to do something extremely deadly to the world.
Well just hope we don't destroy all trees, and end up having to eat Soylent Green.

good metaphor with the Band-Aids. cuz they NEVER WORK!!!!!!
*deep breath* okay, better now. anyways, the reason why a lot of people don't learn from the past is because they don't like to think about how bad we used to be.

Now and then I announce "I know you're listening" to empty rooms. If I'm wrong, no one knows. And if I'm right, maybe i just freaked the hell out of some secret organization. It's basically Paschal's wager for the paranoid prankster.

That and medical care relying on luck, transportation that took months to get anywhere, aristrocracy and dictatorship in most places, less english speakers, etc.
Though in the grand scheme of things, we have gotten worse. However, I am not saying we should return, or backtrack. I'm saying we should wake up and smell the polution.

Oh I wouldn't mind the aristocracy But I'd be, y'know, pulling a Mulan and joining the army.Falconer wrote:That and medical care relying on luck, transportation that took months to get anywhere, aristrocracy and dictatorship in most places, less english speakers, etc.

Ok let us take it point my point comparison.Falconer wrote: Used to be?
An unwanted war in the Middle East: The Crusades They went on and off for quite a while, and was more or less the same problem we are having right now.
Homosexuality is nothing new. In fact the samurai and Spartans were encouraged to practice homosexual acts. They believed it helped the bond between teacher and student. NOTE: The two above links deal with the topic of homosexuality and other things like that. Don’t go to them unless you have to.
The AIDS epidemic, the avian flu "crisis": Well sickness has hit us many times, like the black plague and things like that. Remember sickness has been used as a weapon many times in the past. But I do admit AIDS is stranger than normal.
And just keep reading the events of the past. Political leaders causing problems and other things like that.
Just be glad we are in a world where people like us know about things like this. Just think what your life would be like even as few as a hundred years ago. I agree the world is going to heck in a handbasket, and I really don’t think we can do anything to help it.

AIDS is a riddle wrapped in an enigma. (I think thats the right phrase.) It seems (Emphasis on seems) to hit hardest drug users, homosexuals, and those who, er, get around a lot.
Not that I'm ignoring those who were contaminated by blood transfusion, or anything.
It just seems strange that at the same time that the aforementioned activities began to rise strongly, this disease rears its ugly head and attacks. I think it was ment to function as a wake-up call.
"Meant by who?" one might say. I leave that up to the individual.

They main problem is you have to change someone's mind on something to do that. An example is, trying to change your mind to see the world as the problem people see it. I agree with you the world is in trouble. All I want to say is: When has it not been? Just look back in history and tell me when the world was in order.
AIDS will not be stopped without major changes on how the world is run. The only way to truly stop the spread is to send everyone found with it to an closed area, with no contact with anyone outside of it. And seeing the numbers on that it will be the size on a moderate sized country. And sounds like you are only thinking about the US problem with it. Our AIDS problem is in somewhat control. Number one reason, you know about it and have been told how to prevent getting it. There are many countries out there, which have no program to educate their people on how to control the spread.
As for a finger at someone, I have nobody to point at. We have all caused something to ruin the world. I know I am not innocent at keeping care of the world. But I do try my best at causing as little problems as I can. And that is what we need to strive for.
