Odd choices. I have been in a Star Trek vs Star Wars debate. (and I can say not many puntches were pulled on it.) But with this I will have to go Star Trek. But I must admit I never liked the story idea for Stargate.

But even Star Trek has lost me as well. But to list some others I like.

1) Dr. Who (old school that is)
2) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
3) Red Dwarf
4) Battlestar Galactica (again the old school ones)
5) Futurama
6) Quantum Leap (the early ones)

then a number of anime shows that may or may not fit into the scifi area.

Stargate: SG-1 was the best show on TV, bar none.

It has its filler moments but overall Stargate was definitively good show. As for Star Trek, except for the movies, I never saw any episodes (public TV stations around here never aired the show)...

I also liked The Outer Limits (1995-2002) just because the show didn't subscribed to the "it must have a happy ending" and they were able to put their characters in any situation they wanted without worrying about the story continuity between episodes.

The Outer Limits? Was that the one with the bad acting and brainwashing? I think I saw that once, before a Star Trek episode came on... milord.

Can't say I've watched Star Trek or Stargate. I still haven't seen Battlestar Galactica, or Heroes, or Firefly, or Serenity, or... well, you get the idea. I haven't seen I Am Legende, or Hancock, or that new movie again starring Will Smith. 7 pounds, that was it. I did manage to see The Day The Earth Stood Still, and was the only person to notice that Keanu Reeves had been naked before while covered in gloop on screen and playing a Messiah figure. But yes, I am sorely lacking in movie knowledge. I'm wondering whether to watch Twilight, now that I've read the book, for fear that the film will be rubbish.

I would sooner use a nail gun to put nail my cheek to a wall than watch the new The Day the Earth Stood Still. One I am a major anti-Reeves fan. And two I just love the classic.

My guess here is I am a lover of classic movies and shows. Even the really bad B movies. Even 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' is worth watching, for its cult/camp value.

Stargate was good, I remember watching the first series when I was younger, but Star Trek was there first for me. I dont watch it now, but its really unbeatable...

Star Trek pwns Star Wars, but it's a close one between Star Trek and Stargate. Personally, i think Stargate was okay but a little farfetched (they never really explained the technology) whereas Star Trek (at least The Next Generation and Enterprise) is slightly believable...besides the warp drive. But it would be really cool if that could be real
I also like HG2G just cuz Douglas Adams is a literary genius and its so damn funny...

Well the warp drive is almost doable. We just don't have the power or technology to do it right now. I watched something a while back about Star Trek technology and what might be done.

yeah it could be possible in the future which would rock. but some of the stuff is sort of possible now - mainly the communication stuff which is AWESOME

a bunch of scientists think that travelling faster than the speed of light is completely impossible, but i think it could happen if and only if we discover a reaction that bends space/time, that sort of thing. otherwise, we're stuck at sub-light speeds. which isn't all that terrible, we just have to come up with suspended animation to travel long distances.

The first sci-fi movie I remember watching was the original Star Wars movies. Then I watched the Stargate movie. In general, I don't like Startrek.

I've seen the SG1 movie.

We don't need to send craft FtL, merely information. Even without Teleportation it puts a Galactic Emp- I mean, Republic within reach.

A lot of SciFi is possible now.

As for good sublight SciFi, have you heard of Marrow? It's a book set on a huge starcraft that goes at 1/3 of the speed of light.

It really depends which star trek you're talking about. The Next Generation was great, as was the original series, but I wasn't really a fan of Voyager, and Enterprise just made me laugh.

But I've always liked Stargate. Watched SG-1 from beginning to end, and most of Atlantis. And, of course, the movies.

i didn't really like the original Star Trek - just because im prejudiced against shatner. but I love TNG and some voyager (with seven of nine, not kes) and deep space 9. the only good enterprises were the ones with the suliban.

DS9 was good. And it's not that I have anything against Voyager so much as the acting and the writing both degraded, and it got a little too... corny.

I did enjoy a good many of the Enterprise episodes, but Archer was just unbelievably... well, he was a parody of himself, along with every other character ever to fill a similar position.

but the real question is, do you like kirk or picard better?

picard will always get my vote

I like Picard better, but not for a lack of liking Kirk.

It's more of a preference to Patrick Stewart over Shatner.

I've gotten round to seeing some Star Trek, thanks to Virgin 1, and I quite like it. I haven't seen Stargate though, so I couldn't say which is better.

I only tend to watch Voyager and TNG, although I say the TNG/DS9 crossover. If I had to make a fictional starship crew, I'll have Picard as the captain and Bashir as the medical officer, with Data for the science.

Hmmm... Picard and Seven of Nine should have a good idea of Borg weaknesses. Seven was the queen of a mini collective in one episode, whereas Picard was intended to be a counterpart to the borg queen. They've both been individuals connected to the collective.

But great points. In 'Best of Both Worlds' he does give them the "sleep" command to take out the borg ship. And in the movie he used a bit of remembered knowledge in fighting the borg.

I have yet to watch an entire episode of Voyager. DS9 really killed my love of star trek.

Tell me about it. I am a Star Trek and Star Wars fan and DS9 almost made me lose my fan-dom. However, the new Star Trek movie most defiantly rekindled my love of the series.
