Some of these are found in India. Could it be that the 'myth' of the Asian Dragon (snakelike) arose from people's experiences of these?

That might work. It depends on whether the limbs got in the way, but I can see people mistaking a gliding dragon for a flying one.
The devil doesn't come dressed in a red cape and pointy horns. He comes as everything you've ever wished for.
