Well (in my mind) females were generally only coloured more drab. Perhaps adding more decorative horns to the males to define them might help.
After all, the lass had to protect the eggs -and- hunt for food. Yes, I think of dragons, should they exist or whatever, as giant mammal-like reptiles

When i draw female dragons i make their faces more slender and widen their eyes to give them more emotion.
I also give them more slender and long tails as well as less horns, basically i take out almost anything that makes it look fearsome and powerful. they're more wise and intelligent looking.
You know, like in real life.

Use earth tones, except with the wings. I think dragons may have used theier wings as part of their mating ritual, and the bright colors could have been hidden when their wings were closed.

Ah well, it evens out in the end; women are smart, men open pickle jars.

Not all women are smart nor are all men dumb.

I think, Blue Tiger, that is the best way to draw a female dragon.

@Buhamat: You're right it does even out. We figure out where the pickle jar is for the guys to open, you open it, everyone eats it, then we put it back away to find for next time. A beautiful circle where everyone benifits.
@ Kojak: true, but you have to aknowledge those who do meet the stereotype, then all the others, look good.

As much as I love that film, I'm locking this thread. I might make a sticky soon on some guidelines on drawing male/female dragons and use examples from what people here have said
