Anything they want, water, but I guess some evil ones could drink blood

Technicly(spelling?) all creatures need to drink water to survive, its not like the dragons would "put out" their fire, yeah, you should check the " all you need to know" part on dragons, it provides satisfying explinations....

Well as far as I know, dragons can drink water, because they make fire with a little spark pouch in their jaw. It's got flint and some sort of chemical in it I think, so that probably wouldn't be affected by them drinking water.
And for frost dragons, they don't have fire anyway.

How far down was this thread again?

dragons drink mercury(in draconic terms quicksilver) to survive the liquid that is so deadly to humans. why wouldnt they drink it? it might give their flame the ability to poisin humans. so i think that a mixture of mercury and water would be enough. but just on a bases why do you need to know? because if its a hatchling feed it milk.

the hell? mercury?
water wouldnt put out the fire, as they dont breath fire as they drink
their fire is made of either ignited gas or venom or acid, as most sane theories go. it ignites because of high release pressure and a catalyst the dragons keep in their mouths, mainly as rocks that dragons are known to chew, such as platinum, caught in their teeth. could also explain the rarity of platinum
but that would be going off topic, and i have done that anyway.
all creatures depend on water... so dragons would too i guess

no offence lillea but dragons wouldnt need water to survive because their fire producing glands on the roof of their mouth would become moist and the flame would only be sustained for a few seconds not minutes. so water would actuly stop the dragon from hunting proparly. would that be a good explanation.

um... you cant contain fire, you do know that, right?

Well, it depends on the dragon really. I've heard of a couple dragons favoring brandy, beer, wine, or even champagne. Some even favor a mixture of all four. Oh, by the way, if you ever see a dragon getting drunk, get the hell out of there!

lol jiderfish i like your defenition of a drunk dragon (if that happened by 2 o'clock in the morning manhatten would be a smoulderiung crater in the ground
) but ye dragons dont contain fire lillian but actuy contain chemicals in glands on the roof of their mouth which the squirt into each other to start fire. so realy my theory was right and doesnt this site actuly tell you what dragons drink?

but no creature can live without water! *gets stressed* ok fine i see your point now at least you make a decent point this time, but they cant drink mercury for the love of god. where the hell do you find great pits of mercury for them to drink?

Ok WW, everything needs water.
From a biological standpoint, water has many distinct properties that are critical for the proliferation of life that set it apart from other substances. It carries out this role by allowing organic compounds to react in ways that ultimately allow replication. All known forms of life depend on water. Water is vital both as a solvent in which many of the body's solutes dissolve and as an essential part of many metabolic processes within the body. Metabolism is the sum total of anabolism and catabolism. In anabolism, water is removed from molecules (through energy requiring enzymatic chemical reactions) in order to grow larger molecules (e.g. starches, triglycerides and proteins for storage of fuels and information). In catabolism, water is used to break bonds in order to generate smaller molecules (e.g. glucose, fatty acids and amino acids to be used for fuels for energy use or other purposes). Water is thus essential and central to these metabolic processes. Therefore, without water, these metabolic processes would cease to exist, leaving us to muse about what processes would be in its place, such as gas absorption, dust collection, etc.
And as Lillea posted, mercury does not occur in "puddles". It is an ore, and needs to be mined. And is normally only a small amount in rocks. So if a dragon does live off mercury, it does so because humans make it for them.
And remember not all dragons in myth even breath fire. Only a very small part of them do.

I'm not saying dragons don't need water, and I'm definitely not saying that they need mercury, but I just want to point out one sentence in that text.
All known forms of life depend on water.
Not all forms of life necessarily must be made of water. For example, there is an interesting moon in our solar system that may have a substitute of methane instead of water. I'm no expert, but this is the only celestial body in our solar system that has the same chemical in liquid, solid, and gaseous forms besides earth. It also may have water as well, it is called Titan, a moon of Saturn.

The reason all known life relies on water is becasue water is so plentiful on Earth (where all known life is) and it is a source of Hydrogen. As far as life that does not rely on water, all theories say that these forms of life would still rely on hydrogen as a resource simply because it is so variable a resource in biology, and so necessary.
If dragons are on Earth, I have every faith that they drink water in some form.

So dragons live on Titan and drink methane?
A problem with that, methane is very combustible. In fact it is believed to be the reason behind the belief dragons breath fire. You know swamp gas flaring up and whatnot.
But I see your point. But that will be the only creature on Earth which will not need water to live.
Oh, and you may want to check out Europa. It has water in all three forms. Or at least it is believed, counting on tidal heating which keeps IO active. And Enceladus check out another moon of Saturn. It has liquid water underground, again due to tidal heating. And Triton a moon of Neptune. Like Titan, it has a nitrogen atmosphere, but much thinner. And even IO can be counted into the list with all of its volcanoes. As well as Ganymede and Callisto, same as above. But most of these moons have water on them.

i agree with vampire hunter...
but if dragons on earth did not drink water, that means theyre not in the animal kingdom at all... they would be on a completely different branch of creature, as all animals in the animal kingdom need water to survive. Therefore a dragon would be an animal which is yet not an animal. Dragons would have completely different digestive systems...
anyone think the government is hiding something?

Lol
Oh they are up to something all right, but you will never now what it is... they cover up everything, bet you that theve covered up aliens and the like... but any ways... I would hav thought that dragons drink water becuase everything else does... except those air plants that need nothing but air... obviously... The whole reason that this thread was brought up was becuase someone thought that dragons drinking water would put out their fire... well.. we can work that out now anyway...

Sorry for the confusion everyone, but I was saying that I disagree that 'everything' needed water. I don't say that dragons are part methane or anything. The Titan thing was just an example. But, yeah, I'll check those out vampirehunter42, I am a total science geek.
