Elections

Post by Falconer »

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3643

For anyone who missed the earlier talk on this. Long story short, we REALLY need an active moderator for the forums. NEED. Having a moderator would help with the occasional spammers in the intro thread, in addition to properly archiving old threads, keeping debate going, and otherwise watching out. Besides the obvious duties, the visible presence of someone in a leader position lends strength to a forum's presence. How seriously would you take a community where if you suddenly decided to start posing, say, porn or racial slurs, no one could do anything about it? The last spammer just put some gold-farming nonsense, but what if he hadn't? What if some newcomer arrives at the site to check it out, and the latest post he sees is Kim Kardashian's film debut?

Tempest, I don't know if you'll see this, but your forum still has visitors. You still have a community here. All we're asking for is a way to govern ourselves so you don't have to.

We should probably have some kind of requirements for who should allowed to run, either post count (maybe ~300), join date (possibly '09 or '10), or by some measure of regular activity in recent times. Beyond that, I don't know who to vote in, but being objective here would probably help.

I almost don't care who it is, so long as someone takes up the mantle.

Hi all,

I'm playing "catch up" tonight and see what I've missed. So I won't really say anything specific about any particular topic at this very moment but to be brutally honest, I dropped the ball and people here deserve a proper apologize for that.

Sorry Falconer, I took a nightly backup on Sunday night and started working on an update before realizing that I had forgotten to temporary disable the board. So the post you made in the next morning wasn't included in the database.

Nevertheless, here's a copy below:

OMFGIGOTAREPLYWTFISTHISSHI-

Tempest! HI! WE MISSED YOU! How've you been?

On a business-y note, I would say the best candidate pool for moderators (based on availability, current and past post frequency, etc. in alphabetical order) would be alondor, BeneathTheStarlight36, Drakel, Dragon444, DragonRider, and myself. Personally I think one new global mod and a local mod for the Introduction sub-forum would be sufficient.

The board has been updated to the latest functional version (mostly bug fixes).

I took the time to take a look at phpBB v3.1 but there were some significant problems with styles backward compatibility as well as database and code changes.

I'm glad you have taken the time to deal with things Tempest, but would it be possible to get the [view new posts] button restored? or was it removed for a reason?

Hmm, good question, there was so many small fixes that I don't know why this feature was removed or doesn't work anymore. And to complicate the matter the style needs to be in sync with the core files of the board (aka "breaking changes" where the two don't play nice anymore).

I'll still look into that matter.

Indeed. When it comes to all but everyone governing themselves, I am inclined to agree with this notion. Despite the fact in which Tempy is currently present in the forums again, I still agree that someone who is here consistently should also be raised forward in the ranking hierarchy here and become a mod.

That said.

*Votes for Falcioner*

A perfect fit for the title in my opinion for reasons that should be clear to everyone here.

i feel like i should say something in response, but i can't think of much. we all have the same basic goals in mind and (unfortunately) the same level of activity lately, none of us seem particularly more or less suited for the job than anyone else.

I will cast a provisional vote for Falconer. However, as far as my suitability goes, I'd like to point out that I'm pretty much always available to moderate the forums on a 2-3 hour cycle, barring the times at which I'm sleeping.

Though it will help if there's a view new posts button, at the current levels of activity any spam will stick out as being "oh look new post oh wait spammer"...

Thanks. And while true, it's not particularly comforting.

In any event, I just need to finish this one last tour, then I can pretty much be on frequently throughout the day, every day.

yeah, i thought of this thread when i reported some of those posts, how someone mentioned having an active mod around for when spammers come along.

i see none of the people who actually are admins/mods have done anything about the posts yet.

I'm still up for modding, and I also say Falconer should take a mod position as another Elder.
As it stands, I think we can mostly count the old Mods out. I can try to message Tempest again. Hopefully get some action done. Last appearance he kinda got sidetracked with the talk about the update.
